Morning in the Rose of the North
Chiang Mai at dawn is a city of contrasts. The 500-year-old temples cast long shadows across streets that still smell of charcoal smoke from morning food stalls.
By 07:00 Route 118 is quiet. The climb out of the basin is gentle, then tighter as the road pushes into the Doi Pha Hom Pok range.
Through the Hill Country
By 09:30 you're above 800 metres. The air cools noticeably. Wiang Pa Pao's viewpoint appears on a left-hander: a sweeping valley of rice terraces.
The local coffee shop at the viewpoint is run by a retired Thai Airways mechanic. Recommended: Oliang (iced Thai coffee) with sticky rice.
The Mekong Appears
Around the 250km mark, Route 1020 drops out of the hills and the Mekong comes into view β broad, brown, hypnotic.
Chiang Khong itself is a slow river town. The guesthouses along the Mekong have rooftop terraces perfect for watching the sun slip behind the Lao hills.
